Description
The Liga Privada Unico L40 Lancero 7″ × 40 is one of the most specialized cigars in Drew Estate’s Liga Privada portfolio, created around a slender format designed to place greater emphasis on its prized wrapper.
The L40 belongs to the Liga Privada Unico Serie, a collection of individual micro-blends that Drew Estate determined deserved to exist as standalone cigars rather than becoming additional sizes within No. 9, T52, or H99. Each Unico is designed around a particular tobacco combination and vitola.
For the L40, Drew Estate wanted to create a Lancero capable of accommodating more tobacco than the traditional format. A classic Lancero typically measures around 38 ring gauge, but Drew Estate added an extra leaf to the blend, increasing the diameter to 40 ring gauge. That deliberate modification ultimately gave the cigar its name: L40.
The cigar showcases the distinctive Connecticut River Valley Stalk-Cut and Cured Habano wrapper associated with Liga Privada T52, surrounding a Brazilian Mata Fina binder and select filler tobaccos. Historical blend documentation identifies three different Nicaraguan Cuban-seed filler leaves, while some contemporary retail specifications additionally identify Honduran tobacco.
Its slender dimensions dramatically increase the wrapper-to-filler ratio compared with larger Liga Privada formats. This allows the Stalk-Cut Habano leaf to take center stage, producing a complex profile of cocoa, earth, espresso, cedar, toast, pepper, leather, citrus, and natural sweetness.
Construction is another defining characteristic. Lancero cigars demand considerable skill because their narrow diameter leaves much less tolerance for errors in bunching. Drew Estate states that the L40 requires a supreme level of skill and expertise and is currently rolled by only one pair at La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate.
The cigar has also performed well in professional blind tastings. Although it has received an 89-point rating, Cigar Aficionado has also awarded the exact L40 Lancero 90 points, allowing us to legitimately market it as a 90-point cigar.
For smokers who appreciate slender cigars and want to experience Liga Privada with significantly greater wrapper influence, the L40 is one of the most interesting expressions in the entire Unico Serie.
WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT
The L40 gives you a very different Liga Privada experience from the thick Feral Flying Pig or the more compact UF-13 Dark.
Its slender 7″ × 40 Lancero proportions increase the influence of the wrapper, putting the distinctive Stalk-Cut Habano leaf front and center.
Expect a complex balance of cocoa, earth, espresso, cedar, toast, pepper, and sweetness, with the gradual flavor development and concentrated wrapper character that make well-constructed Lanceros so appealing.
KEY FEATURES EXTENDED
- Medium-to-Full-Bodied – Rich and flavorful without relying solely on raw strength, providing a more nuanced expression of Liga Privada.
- Complex Lancero Profile – Layers of cocoa, earth, espresso, cedar, toast, pepper, leather, citrus, and subtle sweetness evolve throughout the long, slender format.
- Purpose-Built 7″ × 40 Lancero – Drew Estate intentionally increased the traditional 38-ring Lancero to 40 ring gauge so the blend could accommodate an additional tobacco leaf.
- T52-Style Stalk-Cut Habano Wrapper – Drew Estate specifically describes L40 as a cigar designed to showcase its T52 wrapper, giving the cigar substantial wrapper-driven character.
- Brazilian Mata Fina Binder – Provides richness and structure beneath the distinctive Connecticut River Valley wrapper.
- Select Cuban-Seed Fillers – Historical blend specifications identify three different Nicaraguan Cuban-seed filler tobaccos, selected specifically for the L40 format.
- Exceptionally Specialized Construction – Drew Estate states that the L40 is currently rolled by only one pair of cigar makers at La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate, reflecting the difficulty of consistently producing this slender vitola.
- Part of Liga Privada Unico Serie – A collection of standalone micro-blends created around individual tobacco combinations and vitolas rather than conventional multi-size lines.
- 90-Point Recognition – The exact Liga Privada Unico L40 Lancero has received 90 points from Cigar Aficionado, including 90-point evaluations in 2018 and 2020.
- Pairing Experience – Its cocoa, earth, espresso, cedar, and pepper profile pairs particularly well with bourbon, aged rum, Scotch, espresso, or black coffee.
WHO IS THIS CIGAR FOR?
The Liga Privada Unico L40 Lancero is ideal for:
- Experienced cigar smokers
- Lancero enthusiasts
- Liga Privada collectors
- T52 enthusiasts
- Wrapper-focused cigar smokers
- Medium-to-full-bodied cigar enthusiasts
- Smokers who value complex flavor progression

PAIRING RECOMMENDATIONS
The Liga Privada L40 Lancero pairs especially well with:
- Bourbon
- Aged Rum
- Single Malt Scotch
- Rye Whiskey
- Espresso
- Black Coffee
- Dark Chocolate
I’d put bourbon and espresso at the top.
Bourbon’s oak, caramel, and vanilla complement the cigar’s cocoa and subtle sweetness, while espresso emphasizes the darker earth, toast, cocoa, and roasted tobacco characteristics.
CIGAR DEPOT’S TAKE
The L40 may be one of the best cigars in the Liga Privada portfolio for understanding how vitola changes the smoking experience.
Most modern premium cigars trend toward 50-, 54-, 60-, and even larger ring gauges. The L40 moves deliberately in the opposite direction.
Its 40 ring gauge creates substantially more wrapper influence, allowing the Stalk-Cut Habano leaf to play a much larger role in every puff.
But Drew Estate didn’t simply make a conventional 38-ring Lancero. They needed another leaf to achieve the blend they wanted, so they increased it to 40.
Add the fact that only one rolling pair currently produces it, and the L40 becomes much more than simply “the skinny Liga Privada.”
That’s the story I would emphasize in the product page.
EXPERT TIPS
Cut Recommendation
Use a precise straight cut and remove only a small portion of the cap. With a 40-ring Lancero, an unnecessarily deep cut can easily damage the head.
Smoking Pace
Smoke this cigar slowly. Thin cigars can heat up faster than larger-ring formats, and overheating can obscure the subtle flavors that make a Lancero worthwhile.
Humidor Recommendation
Store around 65–69% RH for proper combustion and wrapper condition.
Estimated Smoking Time
Approximately 75–100 minutes, depending on smoking pace.
Best Occasion
Excellent for a focused evening session when you want to pay attention to flavor progression and wrapper character rather than simply smoke volume.
